Self Portrait

Here's a little painting a bit rough around the edges, which I started a little more than a week ago. I orginally was set to paint a co-worker but opted to get a little more practice in. Not quite sure how I feel about this, after seeing the work that has been posted here. There are some amazing artists here.

Anyways, this painting is 12"X12". It is painted from a digital photo. Once I get a bit more confidence I may attempt to paint a portrait from life, however for the time being I would like to become more familiar with setting up a portrait ie., Lighting, posing etc,... My next painting I want to do a more figureative theme. I just need to find a model.

Brian, I echo Lacey's reaction. This is so strong and well modeled. There's a feeling of solidity in your facial planes that translates into character. The slight tilt of your head, the direct (yet not quite intense) gaze, it all comes together to say something about you. I would like to see more of your work.

I really like this too, Brian, you've got a great style, individual and strong.

You've also done a super job with dual light sources. If you review some of the threads on lighting your subject on this Forum, you'll see that a single light source makes it easier to find volume on the face, Next time you can light yourself that way and see if you like it as much.

I like this as well. If you work again from a photo for another self portrait, be sure to flip the image on Photoshop first, so that you will be able to augment your painting by using a mirror. Otherwise you'll end up with two right - or left- sides of your face.
