UGA Museum Gems

Hi -

If any of you are lucky enough to live within traveling distance of the University of Georgia (Athens), there is a visual treat waiting for you.

I couldn't believe it - standing in front of a gem of a watercolor (Flower for Teacher) by Winslow Homer, admiring a beautiful Robert Henri portrait of a little girl, looking at vigorous paintings by George Bellows.

They had some other nice exhibitions going on too, but these made my day!

Here is some info below, stolen from their website http://www.uga.edu/gamuseum/Exhibitions.html

And here's a link to a few of the paintings:

Selections from the Eva Underhill Holbrook Memorial Collection of American Art
January 15-March 20, 2005

American painting is the focus of the Georgia Museum of Art's collection. A passionate collector, Alfred Heber Holbrook, the museum's founder, combined sound judgment in acquisition with sensitivity to a continuum of art historical periods and artistic styles. Nineteenth-century works include those by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, George Inness, Elizabeth Jane Gardner, and James McNeill Whistler. The collection is especially strong in early twentieth-century paintings with important works by, among others, Stuart Davis, Reginald Marsh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ben Shahn, Lucy May Stanton, and Andrew Wyeth. Late twentieth-century painters in the collection include Charles Burchfield, Alice Neel, Helen Frankenthaler, and Elaine de Kooning.
